Over 100,000 people gathered on Feb. 28, 2026 in Athens to mark the third anniversary of the Tempi train crash, which killed 57 people. The association of victims’ relatives, pupils, students, trade unions, political organizations, and Athenian residents assembled at central Syntagma Square in front of Parliament.
Police maintained a heavy presence in the city from the early morning hours. Extensive checks across the city center resulted in 200 detentions and 19 arrests.
After the central speeches concluded, protesters remained in front of Parliament. Riot police and motorbike rapid response units carried out repeated operations and arrests to disperse the crowd and reopen traffic.
The trial for the Tempi train crash is scheduled to begin on March 23 in the city of Larisa. Protests are expected to intensify around that date. More in links below.
