People have taken to the streets in Albania for over a month now. What started as a protest about environmental concerns and a luxury resort tied to President Trump’s son-in-law has turned into a mass movement against the government, with people demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister Edi Rama.
The story begins with a development plan for the Vjosa-Narta lagoon, a protected wetland on Albania’s Adriatic coast, and the nearby uninhabited island of Sazan, once a secret Soviet-era military base, now eyed as the site of a luxury tourism complex. The project is reportedly worth well over one billion euros and is tied to Affinity Partners, the investment firm through which American businessman and politician Jared Kushner is acquiring Sazan. The firm was established to use Saudi Arabian capital to facilitate investments between Israel and the Arab world.
Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump have spoken publicly about their vision for the area; high-end, eco-luxury, a yacht marina, wellness spa, and fine-dining restaurants, transforming a stretch of pristine coastline into a five-star destination.
The protests have reached the diaspora. Unicorn Riot heard from Albanians protesting in Greece.
