Unicorn Riot is on the ground sharing voices and stories, contextualizing social issues through our free non-commercial media.

You, our supporters and audience, has allowed for this reality to become possible, for your struggles and your dreams, and those of others, to be heard and disseminated to the masses, to build a community based on your values and not those of the corporate media. Help Unicorn Riot embark on our fourth year of exposing, exploring, and amplifying pertinent stories!

Those extra few dollars you can add to our pot circulate right back to you through the voices, stories, and experiences that are seen, heard, and felt in our live feeds, interviews, videos, and articles. Pertinent solutions to issues that impact millions are often found in our media that examines problems from the front-lines of social and environmental conflicts. Those solutions go a long way to actualizing the visions for a better world. Unicorn Riot media also delivers joy and education through spotlighting different struggles and ways of life.

Our small team of journalists work around the clock to produce original high quality media that is reliable, educational, and available to the public consumption for free through Creative Commons licensing. Unicorn Riot does not accept corporate or government support.

Unicorn Riot is one of the cutting edge independent media outlets that thousands of people rely on and we see the need to invest in delving deeper into providing a more autonomous and decentralized architecture for distributing our content online. Your support has already enabled us to get better equipment and to start the process of creating our own live media player on the internet.

In an effort to bring our viewers uncensored live coverage of events, our journalists often must navigate dangerous situations that place our bodies at high risk. Your support provides our organization resources to keep our reporters safe, which allows us to continue reporting on the ground, from the front lines.

We need you, our community of supporters, to help us continue our work of creating a new type of media organization – without bosses, modeled around horizontalism.

  • Independent, commercial-free, educational, non-hierarchical 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to exposing root causes of dynamic social and environmental issues through amplifying stories and exploring sustainable alternatives in today’s globalized world.
  • Journalists and multimedia artists providing access to free coverage of events using live video streams, finely edited video pieces, and even feature-length documentaries such as ‘Black Snake Killaz: A #NoDAPL Story‘.
  • Volunteer-operated organization seeking sustainability to provide a livable wage for our media team. The yearly operational budget for Unicorn Riot is substantially smaller than other media organizations.
  • Investigative journalists who’ve been used in primary source reporting by media organizations such as PBS, the New York Times, the Guardian, and Columbia Journalism Review among many others. Our work has been cited for our coverage in Standing Rock, Charlottesville, protests around police killings of Philando Castile and Jamar Clark, houseless issues in Denver, as well as our Discord Leaks archive, which have created context around the rise of far-right nationalism.

“While other organizations wrote celebrity profiles that marveled at the sartorial sense of fashion-conscious fascists, Unicorn Riot revealed what the alt-right was talking about when they thought no one was listening.” – Baynard Woods, Columbia Journalism Review

“Unicorn Riot’s non-commercialized independent perspective provided a unique view into unfolding events in a remote area of the country. Without them we would not have many of the facts about what is happening at Standing Rock” – The Lumineers

“It was very savvy on their part, I thought,” he said. “And that includes the live-streaming that Unicorn Riot did. That was impressive. And their use of Twitter, which is everywhere now, was also fascinating.” – MPR News Director, Mike Edgerly
