During a press conference on November 18, 2024 at the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis, the mother of Jermaine Ferguson, Mary Ferguson, was among the speakers. She said her son has a life sentence for a murder he did not commit.
“My name is Mary Ferguson and my son is Jermaine Ferguson and he been locked up for 19 years for something he did not do. And we need the systems to get involved to get my son home. He has a outdate that’s not even an outdate. In all these years, have nobody even looked into it. It seems like you should wonder why someone is in prison without an outdate. And wonder why. You have to ask yourself, why is this man locked up for all these years? What happened? And if you look into it, you will see that nothing happened. He wasn’t involved. My heart is broken. My heart breaks every single day that I can’t see my son. And it hurts. It really hurts to feel like I can’t do nothing for him, because the system is not out here to help him. So I am calling to see if someone can help get my son home. I don’t want to die before I see my son or hug my son. I don’t want him to can’t come and see me if anything happened to me. I want my son home and he’s in there for something he did not do. And that’s not fair. It’s not fair. So please, free Jermaine Ferguson.”
Jermaine Ferguson was convicted of first-degree murder in the December 2004 shooting death of Joseph Papasodora. Ferguson was alleged to be one of the three men and he was arrested in May 2005 and later convicted for the murder based on uncorroborated accomplice testimony and multiple jailhouse testimonies, which led to some plea deals.
One of those involved in the killing, Kentrell Green, admitted later that he lied about Ferguson’s involvement because the Minneapolis Police were threatening to take his son away from their mother and threatened to send her to prison if he, as well as she, didn’t testify against Ferguson.
“I was told I would lose my son and do life in prison if I didn’t give the police Jermaine Ferguson.” Kentrell Green, court transcript
