November 6th, 2016 Water Protectors returned to Turtle Island to try to reclaim the sacred site. A small group of Water Protectors created a beachhead and erected barricades. They then began ferrying over hundreds using canoes. Police responded with canisters of tear gas from the top of the hill. As the protectors massed to inch their way to the top. Elders appeared telling everyone to turn back because they were standing on burial sites. Small arguments occured on the front line, but eventually people heeded the elders and returned to camp leaving the police who’ve been encamped on the burial site for the past few days in place.
