Critically Ill Children Leave Gaza for Treatment in Egypt

Khan Younis, Gaza, Palestine — Nearly two dozen critically ill children were evacuated from the ravaged Gaza Strip and brought to Egypt for medical treatment on June 27. This was the first medical evacuation of Palestinians since May when Israel closed the Karem Abu Salem / Karem Shalom crossing as they invaded Rafah.

Nineteen minors in total, five with cancer, were allowed to travel to Egypt along with dozens of adult companions. Some will seek medical treatment in Egypt and others will go abroad. These are just 19 of over 25,000 patients seeking treatment outside of Gaza, over 980 are children with cancer.

The head of Gaza’s hospitals, Dr. Mohammed Zaquo, said the patients are treatable, but “are going to die if they are stopped inside Gaza and cannot get exit outside Gaza for treatment in Egypt.”

According to the Gaza’s health ministry, at least 38,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel began its war on Gaza after a Hamas-led surprise attack on Israel killed over 1,000 Israelis on October 7, 2023.
