Israeli Airstrikes Target Medical Facility, Kill Five Health Ministry Workers

Gaza, Palestine — More than 1,150 Palestinians working in the health sector in Gaza have been killed by Israeli forces since Oct. 7, 2023 — one of many atrocities inflicted upon Palestinians over the last year. Two weeks ago, 986 health workers who’ve been killed were named publicly. Four days later, on Sept. 21, five Gaza Health Ministry (GHM) workers were killed when Israel bombed a medical storage facility in the southern Gaza Strip.

The head of Gaza’s hospitals, Dr. Mohammed Zaquo, told Unicorn Riot that the staff who were killed were bringing medical supplies to the hospitals, which he said have very little medical inventory. The storage facility that was targeted by the Israeli airstrike was in the Musbah area of Rafah in southern Gaza.

During a press conference, Dr. Zaquo called on the World Health Organization, United Nations, and the International Committee of the Red Cross to protect the medical workers from being directly targeted by Israel and allow them “to do their jobs inside the hospitals.”

As of Wednesday, nearly 41,700 Palestinians are officially listed by the GHM as being killed by Israel over the last year in the bombarded Gaza Strip and over 96,625 have been injured. A massive part of the two-plus million Palestinian residents in Gaza have been forcibly displaced.

Mourners pray over the bodies of Gaza Health Ministry workers killed in a September 21 Israeli aerial assault.
