Johnson City, TN – Organizers with the group Appalachians Against Uranium rallied today in the second action of a pressure campaign aimed at stopping the expansion of the nuclear industry in eastern Tennessee.
The caravan of protesters targeted Summers-Taylor, a concrete and paving contractor who is working with the nuclear technology company BWXT Technologies, Inc. to expand one of two facilities the group owns in the region.
The paving company is pouring concrete in Jonesborough, Tennessee where BWXT has a plant that processes high-purity depleted uranium for nuclear weapons casings among other things.
The group drove past Summers-Taylor’s production plant and headquarters, honking and voicing their opposition to the project and the nuclear industry more broadly.
After driving by the company’s office, protesters entered the lobby of Summers-Taylor to deliver a letter to Executive Vice President of Operations Ted Bryant asking the company to drop its contract with BWXT.
