Dozens of Migrant Families Face Eviction in Aurora, CO with Less Than One Week’s Notice

Aurora, CO — On the morning of August 7, 2024, over 85 migrant families who live at the Fitzsimons Place Apartments owned by Nome Partners LLC were told they have six days to vacate their homes. The migrant families are predominantly from Venezuela, which some advocates say is a key component contributing to the city’s decision to evict them.

“In response to [the] election in Venezuela, as well as the racist and bigoted belief that all people and their children from Venezuela are part of a ‘terrorist’ militia proposed by Aurora City Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky and Aurora Police Department’s Twitter accounts, the city of Aurora is choosing to evict an estimated [85] families.”

In a post on July 29, councilmember Danielle Jurinsky claimed that on the evening of July 28, migrants from Venezuela “invaded” shopping centers and parked their cars in such a way where other people’s cars were “trapped in.” She also claimed that “there [were] reports of assaults, theft, and gunshots in the air,” however, there were no arrests or citations reported. Despite Jurinsky’s claims of a violent event, which according to her, included a police car being “shot up,” the Aurora Police Department disputed those claims. Police spokesman Matthew Longshore told the Denver Gazette, “While there are claims that some attendees at the gathering rioted, causing damage to businesses, passing vehicles and causing harm to passersby in the area, APD has received no such reports to date.”
