Rally and March to Defund MPD after George Floyd: Day 12

Minneapolis, MN – Unicorn Riot covered a march demanding the Minneapolis Police Department is defunded and disbanded. Thousands attended this action led by Black youth – now the 12th straight day of protests and actions in the city after George Floyd was murdered by police.

The event started at 2 p.m. at Bottineau Field in Northeast Minneapolis and set off on a march a little after 3 p.m. Watch the full event below:

In a blunt address to the crowd, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN5) “We need to completely dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department,” saying that reforms had failed.

The march passed the Minneapolis Police Federation building, where a large banner was unfurled that said “Notice: Close for Business” and featured a smashed police car. Many banners and signs calling on Bob Kroll, the president of the Minneapolis Police Union were displayed and left at the building.

The march took space at many intersections. During one of the delays in marching, the dance company, New Black City, performed near the truck with the music system that was leading the march.

As the march moved south, we followed.

The march ended near Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s residence where he was asked if he was in favor of dismantling the MPD, to which he responded, “I do not support the full abolition of the police department” and was asked to leave.
